I’ve played fantasy basketball for 10 years now. We all want to be in active, fun leagues that have zero collusion and a fair commissioner. Unfortunately, there are some team owners that take a good thing just a little too far.

Making dozens of unbalanced trade offers in the hopes that one sticks

You know the type. This fantasy basketball owner makes the maximum amount of trades, all of them unbalanced, in the hopes that one uninformed sucker accepts one of them. Many times, the trade still gets voted down, but the owner depends on the sheer volume of offers to get one or two through. These owners are the spammers of fantasy basketball; unfortunately, like email spam, there are dimwits out there that still accept these types of offers.

Adding and dropping in order to find the sleeper of the year

This is not to be confused with “streaming”, a legitimate fantasy basketball strategy. This owner adds and drops fantasy basketball players like they’re hot potatoes. He is trying to find the diamond in the rough, which is commendable, but it involves a ton of wasted effort. In fantasy basketball, one should not be afraid to pull the trigger on add / drops, but 10 a week? Ridiculous.

Setting your weekly lineup at any other time than the day before

I understand. Time is limited. You want to set your fantasy basketball lineup once a month and be done with it. You also want the Los Angeles Clippers to have a better year than the Los Angeles Lakers. It’s not going to happen. Injuries and lineup changes happen daily in fantasy basketball. Owners have to be on their toes if they want to win. I always set my lineups on Sundays, Monday morning if possible. Otherwise you’ll have an entire week of an injured Elton Brand getting you nothing but zeros.

Owning two (or more!) teams in the same league

The slick owner that thinks he’s got this fantasy basketball system figured out. First off, it’s entirely against the rules and it’s not easy to hide either. In the fantasy basketball leagues that you pay for, they track this sort of stuff. You aren’t going to get away with jack, even if you are making balanced trades.

Team owners that yell “Collusion!” at every trade offer they are not a part of

These owners think the world is out to get them. Allen Iverson was supposed to be their savior this year (and they believe he should be starting on the Lakers). Newsflash: trades happen. It makes the league better. If it’s unfair, vote it down, then go back to playing NBA 2010 where, thanks to your trading skillz, Allen Iverson does start on the Lakers.

Injury bug ensnares NBA centers

One of the most unpredictable elements of fantasy basketball is injuries. Sure, some players are more likely to get injured than others, but even that can surprise you.

Take, for example, the barrage of recent injuries to NBA centers. We’d expect to see injuries to Shaquille O’Neal or Yao Ming, given their history. But both are playing healthy as ever (even if Shaq does skip some games). However, season-ending injuries to Chris Kaman, Elton Brand, Al Jefferson, Andrew Bogut and the long absences of Carlos Boozer and Andrew Bynum are being felt across the fantasy basketball leagues. And it hurts.

Even Marcus Camby has been relatively healthy. Next thing you know, Andris Biedrens will be out for the season and Dwight Howard will be injured in a freakish 12-foot dunking accident.
